4. "Social distancing" nella storia dell'inglese

Se queste sono le attestazioni del sintagma "distanziamento sociale" (2015 e 2018-2019-2020) in italiano, quali invece quelle dell'ingl. "social distancing"?

Innanzi tutto il sintagma manca nella lessicografia istituzionale, nel Webster 1961, nel Merriam-Webstyer's Collegiate Dictionary 2003¹¹, e soprattutto nell'Oxford English dictionary [OED] on line. C'è sì distancing ma solo come deverbale di "distance, v.": "Derivatives", "distancing  n. and adj.".

4.1 "Social distance" nell'OED

Il sintagma più vicino semanticamente a social distancing nell'OED è social distance definito con riferimento soprattutto alla prossemica:

"2. The physical distance maintained between individuals in social contexts; spec. (in the study of proxemics) a physical distance, typically considered to be 4 to 12 feet (approx. 1.2 to 3.7 metres), maintained between individuals in certain social contexts, esp. in impersonal interactions such as business dealings".

Ed è documentato con ess. del 1935, 1955 G. Sircom tr. H. Hediger, 1966 E. T. Hall Hidden Dimension, 1985 C. Turk, 2006 G. Hannell.

Il composto social distance è indicato prima sinteticamente come etimo sincronico e come tipo morfologico ("Origin: Formed within English, by compounding"), poi identificato nei suoi costituenti ("Etymons: social adj., distance n.") e infine analizzato nella sua struttura morfologica ("Etymology: < social adj. + distance n. "). En passant, si noterà l'uso non proprio felice della terminologia metalinguistica: "Origin" per indicare a un tempo l'etimo sincronico ovvero l'essere una neoformazione e formalmente un composto); -- "Etymons" per indicare le unità del composto, mentre con "Etymology" si fornisce l'analisi strutturale del composto.

La differenza semantica tra social distance e social distancing sembra riconducibile all'opposizione tra 'il creare distanza sociale, personale' (social distancing) e 'il risultato di tale azione', appunto 'la distanza (sociale)' ([social] distance), fermo restando che social distance è proprio dell'ambito della prossemica, mentre social distancing caratterizza il settore della virologia.

In italiano, il distanziamento sociale ha caratterizzato almeno dagli anni '70 del '900 la sociologia e psicologia, estendendosi poi -- si direbbe nel 2018-2020, ma già nel 2015 -- all'ambito virologico. Il sintagma "distanza sociale" è rimasto, sembrerebbe, in disparte e così pure il sintagma distanza personale (= 'della persona'), probabilmente più trasparente rispetto a distanziamento sociale (= 'dalla società'!).

4.2. Vitalità di social distancing (GOV. UK 2020, OMS)

La vitalità del sintagma social standing è chiaramente dimostrata dall'uso documentato nel sito del "GOV.UK: "Coronavirus (COVID-19): what you need to do", ovvero nelle indicazioni fornite tra il 21 e 30 marzo 2020:

(i) COVID-19: guidance on social distancing and for vulnerable people

Guidance on social distancing for everyone in the UK, including children, and protecting older people and vulnerable people.Updated: 30 March 2020

 (ii) Staying at home and away from others (social distancing).The single most important action we can all take in fighting coronavirus is to stay at home in order to protect the NHS and save lives. Updated: 29 March 2020

Come mi fa presente una gentilissima anglo-nativofona, il sito della OMS (https://www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019/advice-for-public) fornisce una importante definizione del nostro termine:

"Maintain social distancing. Maintain at least 1 metre (3 feet) distance between yourself and anyone who is coughing or sneezing",

col commento che "That distance was later expanded. I think the UK government now advises 6 feet.".

4.3. "Social distancing" nella storia (googliana) 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, ecc.

Per sostenere la dipendenza del sintagma italiano distanziamento sociale (marcato, come si è detto, semanticamente per "distanziamento individuale" o "distanza personale") dall'inglese social distancing, occorre accertare la anteriorità di quest'ultimo al 2018-2020, anzi al 2015.

Una paziente indagine in "Google libri ricerca avanzata" consente di individuare nell'arco di un decennio (2000-2010) non poche attestazioni di social distancing virale, almeno a partire dal 2006, precedenti quindi a quelle su ricordate di distanziamento sociale (2015, 2018-2020), che dimostrano la dipendenza dell'espressione italiana da quella inglese nell'accezione virale. Ci limitiamo qui a indicarne qualcuna:

Bureau of National Affairs, Incorporated, 2006: "Pagano said that some social distancing techniques that could be effective for the workplace include: □ staying at least three feet away (some experts advocate six feet away) from work colleagues at meetings, while sitting at desks or..[...]." (BNA Human Resources Report, p. 1084).

Institute of Medicine of the National Academies‎ 2006: "Use of masks by the public in addition to social distancing and education on hand hygiene was found to be strongly protective and significantly reduced the risk for SARS (Wu et al., 2004), although the methodological limitations of the study.[...]" (Reusability of Facemasks During an Influenza Pandemic. Facing the flu, Washington, D.C., The National Academic Press, p. 52).

2007: "By Catherine Hoixingsworth Safety & Health CDC's Interim Pandemic Flu Guidance Suggests 'Social Distancing' in Workplace. Employers should be prepared for staff absences and consider "social distancing" in the workplace that could [...]" (Daily Labor Report, Edizioni 21-39, p. A-37).

Jeffrey R. Ryan ed. 2008 " 7.5.5 Social Distancing. Dr. Julie Gerberding of the CDC alluded to social distancing as a substitute to quarantine. Social distancing measures are designed to increase the distance between people in an outbreak zone and to reduce the opportunities for disease transmission to occur".

"Widespread acceptance of social distancing concepts depends largely on the public health official's  ability to explain the concept in a way that the average citizen can put into practice" (Pandemic Influenza. Emergency Planning and Community Preparedness, CRC Press, Boca Raton, p. 170).

Bernice Steinhardt june 2009: "The Key Elements asks agencies if they have considered implementation of social distancing policies to prevent influenza pandemic spread at work. Influenza is thought to be primarily spread through large respiratory droplets that directly contact the nose, mouth, or the eyes" (Influenza Pandemic: Increased Agency Accountability Could Help Protect Federal Employees Serving the Public in the Event of a Pandemic, p. 13).

 Alla fine, i calchi semantici sembrano ricordare i pazienti (infetti) asintomatici, che però non preoccupano minimamente i neopuristi.
